Winter 01Dog

The winter weather can be harsh on the skin of your dog, especially if you are elderly. As dogs age, their oil-secreting glands slow down, which makes them prone to dry skin. To help your pet survive the winter with skin and coat, follow these suggestions:

Use a humidifier chamber. The air in most homes are dry during the colder months, which depletes moisture from the skin and coat of your dog. A humidifier adds moisture to the air required.

When you bathe your dog more, use a moisturizing shampoo from the pet store. Soaps and shampoos are formulated for men pH of human skin and can cause irritation, dry itchy skin. You dry with thick towels before taking out. A hairdryer at this age can be hard on dry skin. Consult your veterinarian about the recommended amount of bathrooms per month for your dog.

Brush your dog regularly. Brushing improves skin, coat and circulation. In addition, lofts keeps the skin clean and heat in the same way that several layers of clothing.

Never shave your dog down to the skin. It's okay to give your dog a plate, but the heat, do not forget to leave your coat a little more in the winter.

Increase your food if it is very active. If your dog spends a lot of outdoor activities, you may need to feed more than their usual food to provide additional power and keep his coat thick and healthy.

Buy him a coat. Older dogs need extra protection against the winter weather. Unless your dog has its own thick skin, bring a sweater or coat and boots on your dog when outside the very cold days.

The dry winter skin is a problem for many dogs, but not necessarily. With a little help from you, your dog can have a healthy coat and a winter without scratches.
